The Grand Setsubun Festival, held at the Kushida Shrine, the head guardian shrine of Fukuoka's Hakata Ward, is a traditional event where people pray for good health and good fortune.

During the bean-throwing ceremonies held every 30 minutes from 10:00 a.m. on February 3, Kabuki actors appearing at Hakataza Theater and other notable guests also participate.

Tracing its roots back to Hakata Matsubayashi, a festival that began around 840 years ago, the Hakata Dontaku is Fukuoka's largest festival and is held every year on May 3 and 4.

Hojoya at Hakozakigu Shrine is one of Hakata's three major festivals. It is a celebration to cherish all living things, abstain from the taking of life, and give thanks for the autumn harvest.
Its origins lie in a divine message received more than 1,000 years ago, and it is held every year from around September 12 to 18. During the festival, around 500 stalls line the approach, and it attracts a total of about one million visitors, making it one of Kyushu’s leading autumn festivals. In odd-numbered years, a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade is also held.

Held at Kushida Shrine, the head guardian shrine of Hakata, the Hakata Okunchi Festival is an autumn festival giving thanks for the harvest and has continued for 1,200 years. It is also counted among Japan’s three great Kunchi festivals.
On October 24, a mikoshi carried on an ox-drawn carriage makes its way through the city, while on the evenings of October 22 and 23, more than 1,000 Japanese paper lanterns are lit to create a mystical scene.
